Notes from the Podcast

A Stanford talk featuring Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, and Congressman Ro Khanna on the future of U.S. leadership in AI.

The Five Layers of AI

  1. Energy — The foundational layer at the bottom of the stack.
  2. Chips — The essential hardware components that come next.
  3. Infrastructure — Systems like cloud environments.
  4. AI Models — The core generative systems and algorithms.
  5. AI Applications — The top and most critical layer, which diffuses the technology into society through enterprise software, consumer software, drug discovery, robotics, and manufacturing.

The AI applications layer is the absolute most critical part of the stack without it, the industry will never scale. It is the interface that enables clients to use AI and the market to adopt it.

I found the Five Layers of AI framework helpful for understanding where I stand in this stack. Where can I contribute to this new technology ecosystem?

The Industrial Reset

The whole industry is being reset. This technology is new, and being an expert AI user is one of the most important skills for students today.

But it's not really a reset where everything starts from zero — AI is still building on foundations that have been researched for decades. It is more about a mindset reset: not everything will or should work the way it did before.

Reset the mindset. Think about what AI can do for us. Embrace the change. Stay curious about how the future can be shaped — and how we can shape it using AI.

we are trying to adopt a technology we have never used before, one that can drastically and sharply reshape our future. The reset isn't about starting from zero as Saas or AI have been build and research for decades. It's about resetting how we think, staying open about what AI can do for us and for the world.

Multiracial Democracy and AI

Congressman Ro Khanna emphasized that the goal of America has always been to be a multiracial democracy. Instead of asking how Americans can serve AI, we need to change direction and ask: how can AI serve the goal of America as a multiracial democracy?

Put humans first, and use AI to help us reach our goals.

AI has been used in unethical ways. If we keep in mind to put humans first, we can ensure the direction of AI remains safe and trustworthy and that this generation builds a good future for the next, the generation that will be born as AI-native.
